Burly

Check out this burl I found on a young white oak!  A burl like this is formed because of some type of stress the tree has endured through its life either from injury, virus, fungus.  All burls are covered with bark even underground.  Insect infestation and mold are the common causes of underground burls.

Winter is Green

Who says its not green in winter?  Moss certainly thinks its a great time to flash vibrant color.  Moss is a great antiseptic and I recommend putting it on wounds.  

Winter Photosynthesis

Winter photosynthesis is very instrumental for many spring ephemerals like this False rue anemone (Isopyrum biternatum)!  With the canopy closing coming very soon spring ephemerals need to be able to capture as much energy (sunlight) for reproduction whenever possible during leaf free months.

Turkey Tail (Coriolus versicolor, Polyporus versicolor) is a beautiful mushroom that comes in a variety of different colors!  It's also very good for your health as it boosts the power of your immune system.

Marching into March!

It's that wonderful time of year when the frozen waters of winter are melting!  Here the sinuosity is of Bear Creek is on magnificent display.  Spring is right around the bend, our home has been eagerly planning upcoming outdoor excursions!  Let start planning camping trips!
